The couple married in 1958, only to be arrested a month later and subsequently exiled from their hometown.

When their case, Loving v. Virginia, went to the Supreme Court, their lawyer asked Richard whether he had anything to say to the justices. He replied simply: “Tell the court I love my wife.”
